Have you ever wanted to go whale watching, or to see the northern lights? If you ever wanted to do those things, then visit Greenland! Greenland is the perfect site for extreme travellers and researchers to find out about the land. Greenland is the third largest island in the world and is located between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. The Greenlandic name for their country is called Kalaallit Nunaat, meaning ‘land of people’, but surprisingly, there aren’t as much people living there as you think! Greenland is unpopulated because of its bitter cold temperature and frosty weather, so only a few citizens live there, forming the population of only 57,000 people.

I boarded the plane from Sydney, and got ready to take off. Australia to Greenland is a very faraway trip, consisting of 20 hours to travel 15,720 kilometres, but I was so excited for all the fantastic activities I’ll be doing there! After a very long period, I eventually arrived at Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. You can actually land at several locations in the country, but stopping in Nuuk is the most popular choice.

I came in Winter, but you might think I’m crazy. The main reason I came at this time is because in Winter, you can see the northern lights more vividly. Firstly, I went on a boat for a whale watching tour, and it was amazing! I saw two humpback whales just six minutes after the ship sailed, and someone claimed that they even saw a pod of dolphins!

That very night, I was standing on the balcony of my accommodation, ‘The Arctic Illusat’. The night sky was tranquil and clear, and the northern lights started to appear slowly. The northern lights are also called Aurora Borealis, opposite to Aurora Australis, which is the Southern lights. The hotel room was brilliant, since I could see all the neon colours of the lights. Pink, blue, green, and yellow were the main colours, making the sky look like a giant canvas with all the colours splashed onto it. There were also faint traces of turquoise too, and I was stunned by the breathtaking sight.

In conclusion, I urge you to come and visit Greenland, or Kalaallit Nunaat. If you like exploring the sea and watching whales, this is the perfect location for you! If you love astronomy or science, the northern lights will astonish you too! So don’t be afraid to visit and just warning you, bring lots of warm clothes, it’ll be minus five degrees in Greenland!
