“Creak!” The massive luxury boat lurched onto its side, and now it’s swaying ferociously against the rocky sea waters. I was on a whale watching tour, but unexpectedly, the southern right whale we saw a few minutes ago bumped into our ship. A giant blast of air headed towards us, and we were bombarded with the freezing wind. “Well, that explains how far Greenland is to the North Pole, only 710 kilometres.” One of the tourists said bitterly. One of the hazards that Greenland face is that the island is getting destroyed by global warming, since most of its ice are melting at a rapid speed. I’ve got the evidence for that when I saw large amounts of ice falling from a distance glacier, causing the waters around it to splash everywhere.

Luckily, all of us survived the whale attack and the boat stopped shaking after a few seconds. Soon after that was over, I headed to my accommodation. I trudged against the frozen road, embracing the howling wind as I shivered constantly. Somehow, a thought just wandered into my brain, because just a month ago, my best friend warned me about the ice in Greenland. She stated that not only does 85% of Greenland is covered in ice, but even the Summer temperatures are under five degrees. “Bad luck”, I muttered to myself. I did not think of that. The only reason I came here in Winter was because this is the time that you could see the northern lights most vividly.

So I sprinted to my accommodation, and arrived just in time to see the vibrant colours steadily rise above the horizon. The sky was filled with different shade of scarlet and lime green, and tons of other hues too. The northern lights are also called Aurora Borealis, which is the scientific name for it. It is also said to be the best light show on Earth, and I could totally agree with that. So if you want to see the terrific sights of the northern lights, or go on a whale watching tour, Greenland is the BEST place to do all those two! But if you aren’t interested, there are plenty more activities for you, like dog sled rides, glacier viewing, or even admire hot springs! Greenland is perfect for kids to explore, and people who love to look at the northern lights. I recommend that you should visit Greenland as soon as you can, and make sure to bring a nice jacket too!
