I stared in awe as the gorgeous sunrise rose steadily about the two volcanoes. This was one of the most beautiful scene I had ever seen. I had just arrived at Borobudur, in the centre of Java, Indonesia. Borobuduris famous for having the biggest Buddhist temple in the world., and was said to be built in the 9th century. It was rediscovered in 1835 , when buried under volcanic ash from the twin volcanoes. Near the temple, there is also a massive stone pyramid, which was built between 750 - 850 BC.

I was in a tourist group, and our guide then told the group to get back in the bus. Our bus was okay, except for the colour, which was neon blue. We then drove to our next destination, the temple itself. By the time we got there, it was already lunch time. We stopped for a meal, which was a restaurant named ‘One Chicken’. It was actually really good, I have to admit. The tickets into the temple was $60, so I paid and went in. The guide also told us to not touch the walls, since it is very breakable.

After the group finished exploring around, we took a one hour hike to ‘Chicken Church’. My knees were aching by the time we arrived, and I looked up. A colossal church shaped like a chicken was a few metres in front of me. I stepped in the sacred monument, and did not expect to see what I saw. How I imagined the inside was dusty and full of dirt, but actually, it was not dirty at all. The tiles on the floor was a match of purple and pink. I headed up, and found myself on the balcony, which was located in the chicken’s head. Then a shout come from downstairs, our guide was calling us to head back to the bus.

Our final terminal was our accommodation. It was about 30 degrees outside, so I turned on the air-conditioner. The whole trip was amazing, and please do try to visit the stunning temples in Borobudur. It is perfect for all Buddhists, or any other tourists too. So buy a ticket today, and make sure to visit the beautiful chicken church!
